Post-tour hotel in Porto

We're taking the Best of Portugal tour this fall. The tour ends in Porto, and we would like to stay on a couple more days before heading to France to join the Basque Country tour.

The tour hotel in Porto is the PortoBay Teatro. The cheapest available room for our dates is just under €300. That's the discounted price! They do have a less expensive category of room, but none available for our post-tour dates. And even that would be about €200, which is still more than I'm happy paying.

So, I'm trolling for your suggestions. I'd like to stay under about €150 for a double en suite room, (cheaper is better!) with breakfast included or at least available. Luxury and business class hotels are not our style; we like smaller hotels, family run if possible, in walkable neighborhoods. B&Bs could work; one of our favorite stays last year was in a B&B in Chartres, recommended on this Forum.

I am checking booking.com; I have in the past found hotels that fit our needs there, in Leiden and Aix-en-Provence, for instance. One or two shown for Porto looked promising, but either were even more expensive than the tour hotel, or had some really dodgy reviews on Trip Advisor. I'll continue to look there, varying our filters, but I've never been steered to a bad hotel by Forum folk.

Thanks. I'm looking forward to your suggestions.

Maribel recently had a post on Fodors Europe Forum that listed Porto hotels she recommended of various price points. One was Duas Portas.
We loved our hotel but it has gotten very expensive since we stayed there so will not mention it’s name!.

Suki, if you posted about that one before, I looked it up and it's waaaaay over our budget! Thanks for the Duas Portas reference; I'll check it out tonight.

Edit to add: I couldn't wait; I went ahead and peeked. It looks good, and gets good reviews on Trip Advisor. Definitely a possible! Thank you!

Jane, you might check out InPorto Gallery Guesthouse as I believe the rates are fair and might fit what you are looking for. I do not have personal experience with the accommodations yet but have reserved a room for my October 2023 trip. Here is a link

A few years ago we stayed atat the Mercador Guesthouse in Porto and were very happy with it. It was up the hill, fairly close to the tower de Clerigos. I just went looking for it out of curiosity, and it looks like it has changed names ( and maybe owners) to Casa Antiga. Prices look good, and it is getting good reviews on booking.com.

The only drop-back for some may be it's location, but we liked it. The Ribeira area seemed extremely crowded to me when we were there. The restaurants near there were good too, and a lot less touristy.

I am going on the Best of Portugal tour in May. Our Porto hotel is Grande Hotel do Porto. I do not know what it's rates are, as I'm not staying over in Porto after the tour ends.

We are staying at Na Travessa in a few weeks. It's a small BnB. They were recommended by a BnB that didn't have availability. Na Travessa serves breakfast, is in a great location and the staff has been incredibly helpful for my trip planning. They are very pleasant people. We are paying about 115 euro per night for end of April.

Jane,

My daughter and I stayed at My Story Apartments Santa Catarina
We booked the family studio apartment with a balcony (on the third floor)

The price was very reasonable for this apartment which is small but comfortable and clean. It does not include breakfast, but there are many places along Rua de Santa Catarina where you can eat ( pastry shops &restaurants)

Here’s our trip report for Porto and more information on this thread also

Enjoy your time in beautiful Portugal!

Wow, thanks everyone! I'll definitely be checking out these suggestions (I've peeked at two of them, and they both look good!) as well as Priscilla's trip reports.

Thank you all very much. I know I've said it before, but I love this Forum. We get great information here, and have made good friends, as well.

Edit to add: three! I've peeked at three and they all look good.

Adding more: One of them has a double room for our dates, in our price range (well, just a whisker over), with a balcony and homemade cheese for breakfast. Oh, yeah!

OK, I've gone back in to book, and I've lost track of the one with balcony and homemade cheese! Aaaargh! Sound familiar to anyone?

I'll look again, but this is so frustrating!

Edit to add: It occurs to me that last night I was looking at the hotels on my phone, today on the laptop. I'll check them on the phone again; perhaps the different platforms are the problem.

We loved the InPatio Guesthouse, a wonderful five room BnB centrally located. It was fantastic.

We took this tour in 2016 and stayed at Grande Hotel do Porto. It was an "interesting" hotel. Very centrally located, grand traditional style main floor and dining room but at least the floor with our room was very plain, more like a dorm. I believe there was a roof-top patio as well. That said, I would stay there again. We were able to easily walk to the metro (or whatever it was called) to get to the airport when our tour ended.

I just booked Na Travessa, which I think is the one I was thinking of last night. It can be cancelled until about a week before we check in, so if something else crops up that looks more interesting, I can switch.

Thanks again, everyone.

Hi Jane,
I don’t have anything to add but just noticed where you are from. I lived in Sand Springs a good portion of my life before moving to Portugal. Small world. Enjoy your trip to this great country.

Kathrynj! Small world, indeed. Your name got my attention; my first name is Katherine, and was supposed to have been spelled with a y, after my Polish grandmother. (The person who filled out the birth report at the hospital got it wrong.) And the initial of my last name is J.

When we were in high school, about 6 or 7 of us Sapulpa girls started hanging out with some guys from Sand Springs. Oh, the backlash! Consorting with the enemy! What do you see in those _____________ ? (Fill in the blank.)

Actually, three of the girls (including my sister) ended up actually marrying Sand Springs guys! One of the couples (not including my sister) is still together.

Good memories; thanks for the note. And for the good wishes for our trip. Everyone I know who has been to Portugal just loved it. We're excited about the trip.
