20 years ago in portugal everywhere you went there were illuminated sconces that hung on walls, in gardens, beside front doors. They were ceramic with shapes cut out to cast interesting shadows. Does anyone know what they are called and where to get them?

If that's what I think, they are called "candeeiros de barro". You can find it everywhere, but mainly in feasts. If there's not a feast ocurring, they are sold permanently in many places.

Thanks. Yes, very similar, but the ones I'm thinking of were like that cut in half. They were for hanging on walls and people would either put them over an electric light or slip a candle in. Maybe they are no longer a "thing".

I do not know where they are available on the internet, but they can be purchased at lots of stores in the Algarve for sure. I have 2 of them in my house (not illuminated) from previous visits. Some are white or clay colored, mine are painted. There are many different sizes as well. I will be in the Algarve in July...I will try to find stores that sell on the internet or you can buy directly from and mailed to you and try to let you know, if that is alright?
Another option is in the surrounding cities where I live are plenty of Portuguese shops...if you send me a PM with your email I can send you some photos of whats available and go from there to get it to you.
From what I remember, they are made to resemble the tops of chimneys in the Algarve.

THAT'S IT!! We were in Coimbra for about 6 month in 1996 and brought a few back. Some were just terra cotta and some painted. I guess they do kind of look like the chimneys of the Algarve, although while we were in the Algarve I didn't pay particular attention, because you could get them anywhere.
That would be FABULOUS if you could send me the names of stores that might ship them. I now live in Iowa, and they would be considered very exotic here. I have a decorating project that I think they would be perfect for.
In my extensive web search I did look at lots of places in RI and MA that sell Portuguese goods, but they were mostly, food, lace, table linens and some roosters.
