Where are some of the best places in Portugal to buy authentic Portuguese tiles, particularly in Lisbon or Porto?
Oh I'm totally following this one. I've seen some people post about a place in Lisbon called solar or something like that. Also wondering if visiting the tile museum is worth it.
When I did a food tour in Lisbon a few weeks ago, my tour guide said that most of the tiles you see in flea markets in portugal are stolen off the sides of buildings. As we were walking around the city, she pointed out places where tiles had been pried off of buildings. (Obviously wouldn’t be the case of you buy new tiles but she recommended against buying old ones from random people.)
Oh and I did enjoy visiting the tile museum
The tile museum is quite nice and worth a trip IMO. There are many places to buy tiles but as the previous poster noted, don’t buy the old ones as they have likely been stolen off buildings.
Most stores that sell ceramics have tiles also, but I don’t know of anyplace totally devoted to them. Of course, they may be out there, I’m just not aware of one.
I did a tour of Fábrica Sant'Anna, THE tile factory, when I was in Lisbon in 2019. It's a bit out of the way, but well worth the effort to take the tour of this facility which has been in operation since 1741.
BTW, I was the only person doing it. I see from the website link below that their tiles are sold other places in town as well as at the factory.
I highly recommend that you visit the Tile Museum.
Do they sell tiles at the Tile Museum?
They do, but the shop is often closed because of staff shortages.
