Portugal - The Algarve end of March

I am planning a trip for last week in March and first week of April. I know the weather will be cool and wondering if I should skip going to The Algarve beach towns for a couple of days and head north instead? Plan to rent a car. Any input would be helpful.

In March I'd expect most Algarve beach towns to be pretty dead, maybe downright deserted. If you want a very quiet experience with these towns all to yourself and without any people, then go for it. If, on the other hand, you were hoping for seaside fun and activities...you might want to think again.

I have spent March/ early April for the last three years on the Algarve. Most places are far from dead, with many Northern Europeans like me and an increasing number of Canadians and Americans seeking milder weather than at home. All the restaurants and cafes were open where I stayed near Tavira. None of the boat trips were running. I have been to Salema at the opposite end of the Algarve in March and that was dead.

It wasn’t beach weather, as it was either too cool or the warmer days were too windy and the sand was blowing. It’s generally good walking weather, although I have experienced several rainy days.

I would head north if you want to experience more Portuguese culture.

How many nights do you have for this trip? Have you been to Lisbon? I have not been to the Algarve, but based on what other people have said about the Algarve in March, I would recommend Lisbon. It's an amazing city with lots to do, and I think the weather would be nicer than the Algarve at that time of year. Certainly nice weather for sightseeing. You could do a day trip to Sintra, or spend a few nights there. And if you want to experience some coastal ambiance, you could spend a night or two in Cascais. Depending on the number of nights you have, you could also go to Porto, but not sure what the weather will be like there.

hope this helps.

I would always skip the Algarve in favor of places north! But, it’s not my favorite part of Portugal. If you want beaches, there are beaches between Lisbon and Porto that are quite lovely. Admittedly, you won’t find the spectacular rock formations, however.
In a two week trip, Lisbon, Porto and points between would be a better trip, IMO.

Thanks to everyone for your input. Probably spend more time up north.
