Portugal temps this past June....were you there then?

I really want to go to Portugal with my adult daughter. However, she is a teacher and best month for her is June. I was in Italy in June one time and it was so hot it affected my trip. I am ok in the 80's with low humidity. What was your experience this June? Did your hotels have a/c?

I've been in Portugal in June but not this last June.

June is still ok temperature wise but heatwaves are always possible, I would monitor the weather forecast.

In the summer I would avoid the interior (Alentejo ) where the temperatures can get over 40 Celsius.

I would plan an itinerary along the coastline, the wind from the ocean cools the first few kilometers inland.

We prefer to use name or chain hotels , they all had A/C, but you can check before booking.
Trains have A/C and also most buses.
Very few restaurants that we used had A/C and none at the cafe's.

You can find actual, historical, day-by-day weather data for most destinations of tourist interest on the website timeanddate.com. Weather varies considerably from year to year, so I like to check the statistics for the appropriate month(s) of the the most recent five years.

Hi Laurie Beth,

I was on the RS Portugal tour in mid-June 2017. I went to Lisbon two days before the tour began. We experienced a heat wave in Lisbon. Temperatures reached 103 degrees (while I was in Sintra walking the walls of the Moorish castle). There was also some forest fires which created a haze. It was not fun at all. All of the hotels we stayed in during the tour had A/C. The heatwave subsided as the tour progressed but those few days in Lisbon exhausted me.

We were just in Lisbon, Coimbra, Porto and various other stops in early June. Arrived June 8 for ten days. It was hot, but I don't remember it being so hot that it impacted our trip. We were out and about every day doing a lot of walking, and just made sure that we wore hats and drank plenty of water (and wine and sangria LOL). We stayed mostly in AirBnB apartments, all of which had air conditioning. I would rather open my windows at night, but some of the central city locations were very noisy.

Of course, our experience in 2023 is no indication of what June 2024 will be like.

I look at the daily temperatures for the towns we’ll be visiting via the Weather Channel app. For the upcoming week the nighttime temperatures are projected to be in the low to mid 60s. In the eastern cities (Ínsua, Coimbra, Tomar) the highs will be in the high 80s/low 90s, but along the coast (Porto, Óbidos, Nazaré) the temps will be in the upper 70s/low 80s.

I’ve lived here 8 years so have experienced June 8 times. Mostly, June is ok, temperature wise. But, as I live in Cascais, we have cooler weather due to being on the coast. When heat waves do occur, it’s usually for 2-3 days tops. I’ve also traveled to Italy with my teacher daughter in late May when it was extremely hot. In my experience, Portugal (closer to the coast) is significantly cooler. As someone mentioned , you don’t want to go to the Alentejo at that time of the year.

Most hotels will have AC. But, I would also check to make sure.

BTW, the recent horrible heat wave in most of Europe has not occurred in Portugal. We have had great weather except for those few days early in the summer.

Laurie, we were travelling around Portugal this June. It was warm and humid although mostly not impacting our plans. The 2nd half of June was hotter than early June and sometimes meant we took a break or had something to eat or drink mid afternoon to avoid the heat of the day. We were in the Algarve the 2nd week of June and in fact it was cool - one day with showers. Maybe that was unusual but it did help exploration. Hope that helps your planning!
