Planning a trip to Portugal in September. Spending some days in Lisbon and looking for a 2nd city to visit and use as a base for another few days. Not driving, traveling by train. Thinking Porto. Good idea or any suggestions,
Would like to see some of the Douro Valley and heard of some boat trips on the river. Anyone done this?
Also, what neighborhood would you recommend for staying in Lisbon?

I really liked Coimbra for a night or two, but particularly as a base for visiting other spots. Porto is more convenient to the Douro Valley. Packing up and moving cities more often takes some effort, but can still be a good use of time. We really liked Guimaraes and Porto. Coimbra not so much at all.
