I realize that in general Europe is very sleepy during the summer months, but we were thinking of going to Portugal in August with our grown kids since that is the only time of the year that works. Is there enough to do and see in Portugal in August? We have been fortunate enough to have done several trips to Europe so we are familiar with traveling abroad. Thanks in advance for any input.
I have been to Portugal in the Summer. It is hot, but the Atlantic coast gets a great sea breeze that cools much of the coastal area.
It is not as hot in Portugal as in other southern European vacation areas like Greece, southern Italy, southern Spain.
I’m not certain what you mean by asking if there is enough to see and do in August. August in one of the biggest tourist months and I don’t recall anything being closed. I know some European cities are known for the locals going on holiday during August. In the three August’s I’ve been here, I haven’t noticed people in the tourist industry doing their holidays in August. January is much more likely to have closures. The big attractions don’t close for anything other than their usual one day a week, either in the summer or winter.
But, it is the hottest month of the year and you may run into a really hot few days. Be certain your accommodations have AC. And, I would avoid the Alentejo due to the heat.
