Portugal in January

Any must-sees in January in Portugal or places not worth traveling to that time of year? The guidebook has a few suggestions, and hearing your experiences would be even more valuable! Thanks in advance.

I wouldn’t head to the Algarve at that time of year. Lisbon, Porto, Evora, Obidos, Coimbra, Tomar, Alcobaca and Batalha are worth visiting in January. How long is your trip?

Really helpful to hear about the southern coast, I would have thought to keep that one on our list given it’s further south / hopefully decent weather.

January is likely to be cold, wet and windy along the Algarve, much of which are purpose built holiday resorts. The Algarve is mostly about beaches and golf, with relatively few attractions being indoors. The cities will have more to offer if the weather is inclement in January. Some of the smaller Algarve resorts will be closed for the winter, but the bigger places remain open.
