portugal in december

Hello!
Landing in Lisbon 12/29 and flying out of Madrid 1/7. I am 30 and I'm traveling with my 20 year old cousin. Looking for beautiful, picturesque places with delicious food and hopefully at least a little night life. Spending 3 nights in Lisbon (including New Year's Eve!) then not sure where to go from there. The Algarve area looks stunning and would allow us to hit Sevilla before Madrid, but I don't know if it would be a waste in the winter. Photos of Porto look spectacular too but the city doesn't seem to have quite the reviews I was hoping for. Have never been to Madrid so will probably want to spend at least 2 nights there. Any and all thoughts would be very much appreciated!!

The Algarve is all about the beaches and December is certainly not beach weather! Stay somewhere such as Evora or Beja in Portugal or Seville in Spain. You aren't giving yourself long in either Lisbon or Madrid and you could fill your time several times over just in these two cities, particularly if you are going to be jetlagged on arrival in Lisbon.

Hey Emily! With the time you have, and considering that it's the better part of a day to travel from Lisbon to Madrid, I'd consider splitting your time evenly between the two cities. From Lisbon, you could day trip to Evora and visit Toledo from Madrid. Also take in to account that new year day might have many attractions closed so plan accordingly. Might be a great day to take Rick's three neighborhood walks in Lisbon and visit Belem.
