Portugal for 3weeks end of June - mainland and Azores?

Hello,

We are planning a 3 week vacation in Portugal starting end of June.
We will be travelling with a 10yo boy.
Please advise if we should include the Azores in this trip.
We are going to rent a car, but consider to flight between Lisbon and Sao Miguel.
While in mainland Portugal we would like to visit Porto, Lisbon and surroundings and then head South to Algarve.
For attractions I came across this website http://www.portugalforkids.com/, also I’m thinking about whales&dolphins watching boat trips.
Any advice on seeing the best of Portugal. Thank you!

I will send you the link to my Azores guide in a private message to look over.

It is difficult to give an opinion to include the Azores because you can easily fill up 3 weeks just on the mainland, and vice versa for the Azores islands. Each of these destinations are totally different, as you will understand better with what I send.

If you decide to include an Azores destination for this trip, choose Sao Miguel for at least 4 days, then do the rest on the mainland. You can always visit the Azores another time for a 2-3 weeks vacation.

Hello, I just read over this discussion and saw that you had more information on planning a trip to the Azores. What appreciate any advise you have. We are a couple in our mid thirties...adventurous...outdoorsy and this seems like a great spot.

Carl, could you please send me your Azores travel guide also? I attended a great session on the Azores at this past weekend’s Travel and Adventure Conference in Santa Clara, CA. Seems like a beautiful place to visit. Azores Airlines flies from Boston to the Azores, and then of course between Lisbon and the islands too. During the summer, they also have direct flights between Oakland, CA and the Azores.

I just looked at Azores Airlines fares for June. They have one flight daily, overnight, direct from Boston to,San Miguel. The fares in June seem to vary from about $290 to $365 per person, one way. I understand that during The summer, they also have direct flights from Oakland CA to San Miguel. Of course you can then fly from San Miguel, no doubt other islands too, on to mainland Portugal.

emilygeyer,

I just sent you a PM with the link.

Per Larry’s observation, there are multiple daily flights between ALL the Azores islands. There are multiple daily flights from Sao Miguel and Terceira to Lisbon and vice versa. Many flights are available from a handful of European cities to/from Sao Miguel by different European airlines.

Azores Airlines offers a free “Stop-Over” program where you can stay in Sao Miguel for up to 7 days with no extra charge to your flights continuing on to Lisbon.

There are some bi-weekly flights from Pico and Faial to Lisbon and vice versa.

I explain flights and everything else about the Azores islands in-depth within my Azores PDF guide, if anyone would like the link.
