Portugal for 16 days

Hello
We are a family of 4 (2 adults mid 50s and 2 teenagers) heading to Lisbon on Sept 10th (we arrive the 11th)
We will be there until Sept 27.

We went to the South of Spain last year and fell in love with Cadiz, Jerez and Granada. We also love Sevilla and have visited many times (lately its been so crowded)
I am looking for a little help in putting together our itinerary. We have never been to Portugal so Im not sure where to start.

Thinking of spending a couple days in Lisbon (3 or 4) and then catching a train but to where!

I dont want to move too much but just enough to enjoy the main things!

We like small towns where we can walk everywhere and catch some family entertainment. We also enjoy the ocean and anything that could be fun for our 15 year olds!

I have put together the following

Sept 10-15 Lisbon Train to Faro
Sept 15-20 Faro Train to Porto
Sept 20-25 Porto train to Lisbon
Sept 25-27 Lisbon to travel home

Thanking you in advance
Happy Travels!

My wife and I have a 21 day visit set for October.
Part of it will be Evora which is an hour or so train ride from Lisbon.
I suggest you look into it

Interesting that you state you like small towns, yet two of your three stops are large cities. A few smaller cities along or near the coast are Óbidos, Nazaré, and Aveiro. Inland are Tomar and Coimbra. Both have rich histories. To me Lisbon is worth three days at most. You might get bored with Faro unless you take a day trip someplace. Being along the Algarve I suspect it will still be fairly busy and crowded the middle of the month.

What I meant by small towns is that I like to stay at the center to enjoy walking around!
And we love the beach everywhere we go. Not all the beaches are or feel the same. We are definitely water people!
Not long ago we were in the Amalfi coast and the beaches were gorgeous!

Porto and Lisbon are must sees. You could go to Cascais which is seaside town not far from Lisbon on the train. There are also lots of places you could stop on the coast between Porto and Lisbon. It’s not really worth going to Faro I don’t think.

That does make sense bc the train from Faro to Porto is 6 hrs. So if we skip Faro, how many days would you spend and where? I've only booked 4 nights in Lisbon upon arrival.

If possible it’s usually a good idea to go to your first destination upon arrival and not split your time in Lisbon. You have to be there to leave and you will save some sightseeing time by keeping your days together.

If you skip Faro you could train immediately to Coimbra for two or three nights and then on to Porto. You can do some day trips from Coimbra. Or you could stay in Nazare on the sea instead of Coimbra and visit Coimbra as a day trip. Lots of easy day trips from Nazare. Some on this forum don’t like Nazare but we love it. Old buildings along the sea, nice promenade, good food.

Nazare, Porto, Lisbon with day trips from each might work for you.
