Portugal for 12 days

First time in portugal so a couple of questions to get me start planning, we are travelling in early April 2025.

Was thinking are we are only using the train system to get around expect with a few tours as well. So thought if we staying in these three locations for these amount of days do you think we can do a number of day trips out of these areas as well.

  1. 4 days in Lisbon and then doing day trips to other areas ie (Sintra and ????
  2. 4 days in Combria
  3. 4 days in Porto (Douro and ???)

My other question is looking at accomodation in Lisbon, which area do you think is best :
1. Lapa
2. Avendias Novas
3. Avendia da liberdade

We do normally prefer to be out of the touristy areas so we can get more of a true portutgal experience but also need to be able to get around easily to see some major tourist areas.

Gosh so much to think about any help would be much appreciated, thanks in advance.

If public transit is really important to you in Lisbon, take a look at the Metro system and choose accommodation whitin walking distance.

Avoid the buses, they're crowded and stuck in traffic often.

Lapa is more of a residential area on a hill.
Avenida da Liberdade has a gentle incline, high end shops and tourists, it's also the largest avenue in Lisbon.
Avenidas Novas is somewhat hilly in places with residential and shops along with a well known museum - Gulbenkian.

Regardless of where you go it's likely to be busy an crowded, my choice is Avenida da Liberdade.

Lisbon day trips, Sintra, Cascais.
Porto day trips, Braga, Guimaraes, Douro Valley

Four days might be a bit much in Coimbra without a car. I would suggest dropping one night there and adding to Lisbon or Porto. That would give you more time for day trips at your more desired location.

GG,
For accommodations in Lisbon, check out Principe Real. Especially around the Praca das flores.

thanks everyone

I have dropped a day from coimbria and added a day in Porto. So now i have 5 days in Porto is it worth staying along the Duoro river so like - Peso da Régua ?

Five days will include day trips to : Aviera, Braga and Guimaraes, one day for Porto itself

Or am I trying to do too much ??? so confusing :)
