Portugal First Time Visitor- 3 weeks

My husband and I are going to Portugal as part of our vacation this year for 3 weeks. We haven't been before. Our main interests are art, culture, and history. What would you all recommend? Thanks in advance.

I wonder how much time you are devoting to this portion of the trip. That would determine your itinerary. Have you looked at any guidebooks for Portugal or this website for some of Mr. Steve’s’ ideas? This link might get you started on planning a workable itinerary. Especially peruse the “At A Glance” section.

As part of a longer trip in 2023, starting and ending in Spain, we spent a couple weeks in Portugal. We spent nights in Penalva do Castelo, Coimbra, Tomar, Nazaré, Óbidos, and Porto. We visited both Batalha and Alcobaca monasteries, Fátima, Almourol castle, Conimbriga Roman ruins, Lamego, Viseu, Aveiro, and a few lesser sites.

In your last post someone asked if you are renting a car. That does make a difference for an itinerary. With 3 weeks you can see a lot. I would recommend 4-5 nights in Lisbon, 2 nights in Sintra, 2-3 nights in Evora 2-3 nights in Coimbra, perhaps stopping to see towns that interest you if you do rent a car ( Obidos, Nazare, Tomar, Batalha etc).
From Coimbra can go up to Porto, and decide how much of the north to do, you could tour the Douro or go north to Guimares and Braga.
