Portugal and Travel

I am just beginning to plan a trip to Portugal for 3 of us. I have two golfers, and one sightseer. We would like recommendations for best area to stay in Lisbon, the Algrave, and Porto. As well as recommend day trips for the sightseer.

Is it smart to rent a car for the duration of our stay? It would make traveling with clubs much easier. We plan to travel in spring of 2026, so we have plenty of time to book VRBO's, hotels, and tourist small group trips.

I appreciate any support, advice, recommendations you can provide.

Hi Debbie I have some experience traveling with golf clubs and recent experience traveling in Portugal without golf clubs. Here's my two cents--
You don't want a car in Lisbon (and probably not Porto but we didn't go there) nor do you want to be dragging golf clubs around. In England I found a luggage storage place in Heathrow where we stored hubby's clubs while we spent four days exploring London. We returned to the airport, retrieved the golf clubs and picked up our rental car. I would suggest something similar in Lisbon.
Driving in Portugal is easy, roads are good but be aware of the tolls. Make sure you get a car big enough for all your luggage including golf clubs and three passengers. Cars tend to be small. As for best places to stay in Lisbon, we picked a small guesthouse on Rua Augusta near Rossio Square. Touristy area, but very well located for transportation. Bolt and Uber are your friend and inexpensive. Can't help with the Algarve or Porto as we explored the central third of the country (Evora, Obidos, Tomar and Coimbra).
