Porto vs Algarve in mid-March

Hi.

First post here!

Active, middle-aged couple trying to figure out where to spend three days prior to around five days in Lisbon (and after 10 days in Andalucia). Algarve or Porto come to mind. I understand that the weather may be more problematic in Porto, but that things may feel shut-down/out-of-season (e.g., Salema) in Algarve. For Algarve, the question of east vs west arises as well (Tavira vs Lagos and Sagres).

We like both nature and city stuff (most of the trip before and after will be city/village destinations).

Any thoughts from those who have been to both (ideally in early spring)?

I would almost always recommend Porto over the Algarve, and not because of the weather. There are simply more unique and charming things about Porto.

I have not been to the Algarve but Porto was wonderful. Walkable. Do hit the train station and perhaps it’s attached TimeOut market. A side trip to Coimbra was excellent. Great food. So much to see. I loved our hotel. Want a hotel recommendation?

We stayed at Pousada Porto on Rua das Flores.

There are at least three hotels on that street. The other two are higher end.

I found it a perfect location. Loved the hotel. So any on that street should be great.
