We are spending 3 nights in Lisbon. We then take the train to Porto for 3 nights with a Duoro River cruise one day. From there we will rent a car and make our way to Sintra. I know it's only 3 hours but we thought of staying halfway and exploring some towns for a night or two. What towns would be the highlights in between Porto and Sintra? What should we not miss?
Where is it best to spend a night in between?

The small cities of Averio and Coimbra are worth a visit. You can ride the colorful Aveiro “gondola-like” boats called moliceiros. Coimbra has the historic University of Coimbra and the students wear traditional black “capa e batina” (cape and robe)-a crucial part of the Portuguese academic uniform.
