Porto to Santiago de Compostela by train

Hi. Is it difficult to do this train trip? While the busses seem to go right through it seems you have to change trains along the way in Vigo with different bookings..
Is it preferable to take the bus trip - or too long to be comfortable and a break is called for along the way? We are thinking of Sept 10 approx. 2 persons over 70yrs.

There are two direct trains per day from Porto Campanhã to Vigo Guixar, morning and evening. More comfortable than the bus.

And I gather from your other post that you plan on renting a car, so you can do so in Vigo. There are places worth visiting between there and Santiago (Cambados, in particular).

For what it's worth, I found Vigo a relatively uninteresting place, so it would not be a place I'd choose to spend time beyond what is necessary.

There are two train stations in Vigo, so if you don't pick up a car there and need to travel on by train, pay careful attention to which stations the inbound and outbound trains use.

Thanks acraven that was my impression too. Really , 4 1/2 hrs on a good bus will be ok - prefer a train, but in travel, one must be flexible....

Yes, if you just want to go straight to Santiago, the bus is a better choice!

With all of Northern Spain ahead of us - and some of France too - and limited time , makes sense to go direct to Santiago .

We did Santiago from Porto using a tour company in Porto. I highly recommend doing that. Can't remember the name of the company.

We had a driver take us across the border to Vigo from Porto to go pick up our rental car. Then we went to Baiona and stayed, traveled through the Rias Baixas ( O Grove, etc) before arriving in Santiago de Compostela, one of our favorite places in Europe. Baiona and the Rias Baixas are a nice addition to a trip to Santiago de C.
Note: We heard bad reviews of the train and prefer a car to a bus.
We continued on to Leon and up to the Basque region, staying in several places along the coast including Hondarribia. . Next two stops in the Pyrenees, then to Mediterranean, lovely seaside Collioure, the Costa Brava, Barcelona.

Thanks Suki....Don't know what you heard about the train crossing? But anyway we have decided to use the bus to get across to San Sebastion - about 4 hrs. should be ok and a fraction of the car price.(now Eu247 for 2) Did one across South Spain once and with wifi it was fine.
