Porto to Salamanca

Going to drive from Porto to Salamanca and then back to Porto this August. I have four days total (have to be back in Porto on the fifth day. I know that the scenic route is taking the A4 to the N222 but then I have conflicting info after that! Also looking for places to stay along the way as well as a place to stay on the third or fourth night in Salamanca.

Any and all info would be appreciated!

Afterthought: is this to much? I am wondering if it would be better to just enjoy the Douro Valley and if so, again, any and all suggestions welcome!
Thanks

If this helps in your decision...
We went from Coimbra to Salamanca on the Alsa bus in 2014 for two nights (Hostal Plaza Mayor de Salamanca). When we arrived we found the plaza was full of some type of "book mobile exhibit" which was disappointing...actually I was so hot and tired that day I almost unraveled but after a cold beer on the perimeter of the plaza I got it together. Even though that was a disappointment (and it was hot in May) we still loved the city. Our stay at Hostal Plaza Mayor de Salamanca led to one of our favorite travel stories. The hostel had air conditioning (and was told it would be turned on if over 32 C (90 F) degrees) it was not on...after many attempts, windows that wouldn't open, door that had to "remain closed" and a few looks like "will you just go away" we received a call in our room where they said in their best English "The freezing process will commence". It eventually it did and blew hot air around. It turned out to be one of my favorite spots in Spain. We followed the suggestion in RS Spain.
