Porto to Lisbon in November

We wanted to take a day to travel from Porto to Lisbon. We were thinking renting a car for our travels so we could stop along the way. Any suggestions? Good idea? Difficulties? Thank you!

6 hours return on the highway, if you get off the highway to visit towns you can easily double that.
Best to stay overnight in Porto, that way you'll have a bit of time to stop along the way in each direction

If you just want to see Porto, take the first train from Lisbon and the last from Porto, that will give you a few hours to sightsee in Porto.

Either way it will be rushed.

Thank you for travel times. I did a quick search & it stated that it was a 2 hour drive! Just saved us a time crunch.

Another question-when is the best time to get airline tickets to Lisbon? Our trip will end in Porto. Should we take train from Porto to Lisbon & do round trip from Lisbon or just fly out of Porto? We’ll have had a day in Porto. Thank you!

Round trip to Lisbon could mean a direct flight to/from the US. Flying into or out of Porto likely means a transfer somewhere in Europe. For just a 3 hour train ride, I would plan splitting my time in Lisbon and flying round trip, probably cheaper as well.

We are flying direct from Porto to Newark in April (and paying less than a Lisbon return). I don’t know if the flight schedules in November are different.

Jan, I wanted to clarify something to you, the pp said its 6 hours RETURN....meaning if you were doing it as a day trip, you would spend 6 hours on the road.....but I read your question as taking a day to travel between the two cities and ending in the other one, is that correct? If that is, I would still keep in mind that its probably around 3 hours one direction. You can definitely find various points of interest on the way and take your time traveling there that day.

If your preferred flights are in/out of Lisbon, I would say go with the farthest away place and end back in your r/t city. Meaning you would go directly to Porto (bus or train probably) your arrival day and actually do this drive the opposite direction, from Porto to Lisbon, ending your trip in Lisbon, not worrying about traveling back to your departure city because you would already be there.
