Porto to Lisbon Flight Questions

Hello:

My wife and I are flying into Lisbon from Boston, staying a few days and then taking the train to Porto. We will be staying in Porto for the remainder of our trip. We are then looking to fly from Porto to Lisbon to Boston. In researching flights, I have a few questions.

  1. At the Porto (OPO) airport, will we be going through customs at that time since our final destination is in the U.S. or do we land in Lisbon and then have to go through customs?

  2. Has anyone flown on TAP Express operated by Portugalia? If so, can a normal-sized carry-on piece of luggage fit into the over-head space above the seats in this plane as it would in their planes for overseas travel?

Thanks in advance for your help with these questions.

Sincerely,

Chris

This baggage info is from the TAP website and says it includes TAP Express and smaller planes. Keep scrolling down the page to learn about that.

When you refer to ‘customs’, I’m thinking you mean passport control, as customs is a walk through thing in Portugal. You will need to go through passport control in Lisbon. But, you won’t in Porto, since you are staying within the EU.
Passport control in Lisbon can be backed up at times, so be aware.

Sorry, but I don’t have any info on your other question. I’ve flown TAP a number of times but not the Express.

Passport control in Lisbon. You will be flying within the country, leaving from Lisbon internationally. Your checked bags will be tagged through in Porto to Boston. Customs in Boston. Just be careful with your carryons. You may have to gate check, if so, they go into the planes luggage compartment so fragile items may be damaged. I have also been offered to check carryons internationally for no charge; again make sure your passport is with you and any fragile items.

I assume you've already booked a round-trip into/out of Lisbon? If so, I'd probably take the train immediately to Porto as soon as you land in Lisbon, then take the train back and spend your time in Lisbon at the end of your trip. Then you won't have to worry about a flight Porto to Lisbon.

But if you haven't booked flights yet, I'd consider an open jaw (multi-city) ticket (one ticket, not two one-ways) into Lisbon out of Porto or vice versa. That's how I did it in May (flew both ways via Madrid to/from the US but flew from Madrid to Lisbon then Porto to Madrid and home from there). Wasn't flying via Boston, though, so your flight options are surely different than mine were.
