Porto to Castelo Rodrigo route

Hello!
We're making a 2 week trip to Portugal in April. For one section we need to get from Porto to Castelo Rodrigo. Can someone recommend the best route? Is there a good place to stop for lunch? I see it is about a 3 hr drive so we won't have a ton of time but is there anything along the way we cannot miss?

Thank you.

Have you taken a look at ViaMichelin? It offers three possibilities ranging from 3:13 to 3:51. I see a lot of seemingly-smaller roads in the area marked in green, meaning that they are considered especially scenic.

The southern route skirts Viseu and goes very near Guarda. I found both of those interesting to wander around on my first trip to Portugal back in the 1980s.

If you haven’t visited the a Duoro Valley, or even if you have, you might want to take the A4 west through the valley to Populo and then head south through Foz Coa to Castelo. I did this trip in reverse and it was a nice drive, stopped at some vineyards but can’t remember where I had lunch. Are you staying at Casa da Cisterna? I stayed there and loved it and I took Anna's tour to see the petroglyphs in the Coa National Park. Don’t miss it!

A 2nd to the suggestion of Foz Coa National Park. A great opportunity to see pre-historic rock drawings up close!

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. Yes, we are staying at Casa de Cisterna. That is why we're going that direction. I am so excited to stay there! We will be in Porto for 3 days prior. Should we wait and do the Duoro River Valley drive when we head to Castelo de Rodrigo?

Thank you!
