I'm looking for ideas/recommendations for two items; a day trip to Aviero and a day trip of the Douro Valley. We will be in Porto in late February for 5 days.

I just posted some Porto day trip options in this thread. Aveiro is an easy train trip from Porto. You can walk into the town from the station.

I would skip Aveiro and visit Braga instead.

Braga is a beautiful city and very authentically Portuguese. It is historically significant with many interesting sites including Bom Jesus do Monte with its beautiful church, and Sé Braga (Braga cathedral). Sé Braga is the oldest cathedral in Portugal with a mix of Gothic, Romanesque and Manueline architecture. Braga is just a wonderful place to walk and enjoy the authentic Portuguese atmosphere. And there is really nothing much to see and do in Aveiro.

Since you are in Porto for just 5 days, and also plan to visit the Douro region, just 1 night or possibly a day trip. I would consider spending the night in the Douro though.
