Porto or Vila Nova de Gaia?

My husband and I will be in the Porto area for 5 days in April. I am looking to book an Airbnb there. Where is a better location? Porto or Vila Nova de Gaia? or are there any hotel recommendations instead? We will be coming through Coimbra. Is it better to rent a car or take the train?

Thank you.

Without knowing your budget, Guest House Duoro is an amazing establishment in Porto. Carmen and Joao have mastered the art of hospitality and you will not find better accommodations for your stay! The rooms in the back of the house are a bit larger; breakfast is a culinary delight and their concierge services are five star. All of their restaurant suggestions were spot on as well as their help in booking a tour of the port wine cellars. Highly recommend! http://guesthousedouro.com/english/welcome.html

We stayed at the InPatio Guesthouse while in Porto and it was simply the best B&B that we have stayed in.

I would stay in Porto rather than Gaia. It’s very easy to get across the river to Gaia by the water taxi. But, your variety of restaurants and things to do will be vastly wider im Porto.
Take the train from Coimbra. It’s easy and inexpensive. It will save you having to drive into Porto and is likely cheaper than driving.

Hello mebwrb,

It's great you're coming to Porto area ;) I agree, even though I live in Vila Nova de Gaia, it would be better for you to get an accommodation in Porto, especially if it is in the historic centre ;) A train would also be a better and cheaper way unless you want the liberty of riding a car.

Enjoy Porto and Portugal ;)

I'd also suggest Porto, as there seemed to be more restaurants and things to do on that side of the river. If you'd like to consider a hotel, I'd highly recommend http://en.hoteldabolsa.com/ .

Taking the train would probably be better as finding parking could be an issue. You might find it helpful to have a look at the RS Portugal guidebook to plan touring.
