We spent three nights and saw everything we wanted to see. You may need more or fewer.

Visited Porto twice in the past 3 years. First time spent 3 nights, allocating one for a day trip to the Douro Valley. We felt it was not enough as we really enjoyed Porto. In our trip in September 2025, we spent 5 nights which included a day for a cooking class in a farmhouse in the countryside. If you have time, would recommend 3 nights, especially if you want to do a day trip.

First, congratulations on timing your proposed Porto stay by nights, which is precise; rather than by days, which is ambiguous. (Other posters, please take note!)

I'm responding only because I was in Porto just last December, where I spent four nights, and could have stayed longer.
Still my answer depends on your style of travel. If at the one extreme, your aim -- and it's a legitimate aim, though not mine -- is just to see the city's Big Tourist Things and then move on, my general answer to "how many nights" questions is (1) For a majority of the world's cities and towns, an afternoon may suffice; (2) For larger, more historic cities and towns, like Porto, at least two nights may do, with at least three strongly recommended; and (3) For the absolute top-notch cities, like Paris and Rome, at least three nights, but with four, and preferably more, recommended.

Now at the other, less populated end of the scale (where I am), if you want to get to know the city, and explore it personally in an unhurried manner for everything it has to offer (which I think the French call flâneurie) in addition to its Big Tourist Things -- and perhaps also sample slices of local life, like a traditional-music concert or, as Sandy mentioned above, a cooking class -- then I, at least, would consider no fewer than three nights for cities like Porto, though I will always strive for four or more.

Thanks, we often stay three nights or more in smaller towns (York, Lake District, Lucca, Nice, Arles … and about a week in larger cities- we did a week in Tokyo, perfect). We should arrive in Porto before noon. The next town is Nazarre (2 nights for day trip;to Tomar), Lisbon then Salema. Yes, nights not days.
