We have three days in Porto at the end of May and I was wondering if it was worth it go out to Foz do Douro to wander around and then maybe a cab to Serralves Museum or is there enough to do within the city to keep us occupied for all three days? Any advice is helpful even if you have another suggestion.
Possibly a better choice is Matosinhos. It’s out by Foz, but has a number of great fish restaurants where you can watch them grill the fish before eating it..
You can take a bus or metro out there. If you take the bus, it goes by the beach in Foz so you could possibly get off for a bit before going on to Matosinhos. I’ve done this on both trips to Porto and likely will in the future.
Also remember Gaia - right across the river from Porto. It’s great fun to visit the port cellars and wineries for an afternoon. Even if you don’t like Port - like me - there are places where you can taste regular wine.
And, a short cruise on the Douro is quite nice. Lastly, Taste Porto has a very nice food tour of the city.
Both trips, I’ve stayed 5 nights and didn’t run out of things to do.
Thanks, I will definitely look into adding Matosinhos into the possible places to explore. We're actually staying on the Gaia side right next to the Luís I Bridge so I'm sure we'll spend a ot time getting to know that area.
We did a walking tour with Porto Walkers and found it to be quite good. Our guide Daniel was a hoot. They also offer wine tours for 25€ that sounded like a really good deal too.
I am not usually fond of the "free tours", but it was a last minute decision to go tour.

I think you can ride an antique tram out towards Matsahinos, and where the point is on the coast ,is where all the good fish restaurants are supposed to be.
Tram nr. 1 will take you from Ribeira (river bank, in front of you apartment but on the other side of the river) all the way along the river till the ocean - that's the meaning of "Foz" (tickets are bought inside the tram, 2,5 eur each). At the end you have a nice garden where you should visit the public rest room (seach google images for "sanitarios passeio alegre"), you can also visit the light house, and walk to the beach (short walk). If you like long walks you can keep going and you will find the city park, where Porto ends and Matosinhos begins (more or less 4 kms) or you can take bus 501 that will leave you at Matosinhos beach - it's a short walk to the restaurant streets (Rua Heróis de França, and Av. Serpa Pinto).
Another option to visit just Matosinhos is by metro, blue line, leave it at Matosinho Sul station: beach on the left, mentioned streets on the right.
