Porto during week or weekend?

I'm working on an Iten for Portugal late May through early June. I have a rez in Lisbon for Wednesday through Saturday, 3 nights. Then I have to choose between Coimbra, or Porto for the next 2 to 3 nights. If we visit Coimbra over the weekend, then Porto would be next, Monday through Thursday. Or i could flip it to catch a casual weekend in Porto. I'm guessing its fine either way, but i want to glean some insight from this community, thank you. We'll be traveling by train between these cities.

What are your starting and ending points on the trip? Obviously Coimbra is in between Lisbon and Porto, so if you start in Lisbon it makes the most sense to stop in Coimbra and continue on to Porto from there, not backtrack.

Unless there is some event in one town or the other on certain dates that make it hard to stay there (graduation in Coimbra in the spring?), personally I would not worry about days of the week vs. weekend. Just plan the most practical itinerary that works for you.

I would stay longer in Porto (than Coimbra). We visited Portugal recently (travelled in the direction from Porto to Lisbon) and stayed 7 nights in Porto at the end of Sept. Days don't really matter, except the city will be more lively and busier on weekends wrt outdoor activities/events. Note if you are interested in art, there are some good artworks in "Seville Museum of Fine Arts (Museo de Bellas Artes)" which is not open on Mondays.
