We're traveling to Lisbon and Faial this July (5 days each). My husband really wants to visit a Port winery. Even though it's a long day trip to Porto from LIsbon, I think that's all the time we can afford. Our itinerary is packed. Any ideas on how to make this happen will be appreciated!
The trains are easy enough, though they require a few changes. It's about 3 hours each way on the fastest train, if you don't mind six hours of your day spent on trains.
The best would be to take the AP train (fastest) from Santa Apolonia or Oriente station to Porto-Campanha. The first train leaves at 7.00 am from Santa Apolonia and gets to Porto just before 10 am. Take taxis to/from the train stations. Tickets do sell out sometimes, so choose a day and buy them soon. You may even be able to get "promo" (discounted) tickets. If you're over 65, you can get a 50% discount on full-price tickets.
You can get direct high speed trains from Lisbon Oriente station - the fastest take just over 2.5 hours. Oriente isn’t the most convenient for the normal tourist areas of Lisbon but it’s an easy ride on the metro.
