My family & I are planning a day trip to Porto from Lisbon on 6/24. I heard that the Sao Joao festival goes from the 23rd & into the 24th. We'd like to avoid the craziness of the festival so does anyone know what the city is like on the 24th? Or should we plan to visit a different day?
I was in Porto during the graduation season and there were parades and floats in downtown. Traffic was substantially disturbed. I suggest you choose different dates.
I was in Porto for Sao Joao in 2019. Sao Joao eve ended up being one of the unanticipated highlights of my trip. My b&b was in one of the older, traditional neighborhoods called Vitoria. Up and down the street, families brought out tables and chairs and grills and set up family gatherings on the sidewalks, spilling into the streets. A number of them sold grilled sardine's, beer, and other traditional foods to passers by like me. Some people just handed me food and drink. There was live music played by middle aged men around the corner. People danced in the street and sang in Portuguese. A cafe by Virtudes park roasted a whole pig outside and sold delicious sandwhiches periodically sliced off it. In adjacent more touristy areas it was more commercial with bars and restaurants selling food and drink outside. There were plenty of places to just sit and people watch. Where I was, lots of people in the streets had children with them. It was a friendly fun kind of crazy in my experience. There were fireworks over the river. People launch paper lanterns that float in the night sky. In the wee hours some people go to the beach but I didn't stay out that late. There were also places with carnival rides for kids outside a church sort of near Clerigos tower.
The next day (24th), many restaurants, cafes, shops, museums etc were closed. However, I was able to do a tour of one of the bigger Port lodges in Villa Nova de Gaia.
The other thing I remember is that some streets were blocked off to traffic during the day on the 23rd and into the night.
Thanks for the replies! We have decided to visit Porto on June 25th instead.
