I will be traveling to Portugal in June and renting a car in Porto. We will then drive into Spain for a week before returning to Porto. I would like to know what is the easiest pick up and drop off location in Porto. I have heard that there are expensive surcharges when renting at the airport. I would like to know if this is true and what your advice would be. Thank you!

Probably the Porto airport would be the best place. I don't remember that much about the train station and rental cars.

I'm not aware of any specific surcharges at the airport (I rented a car there last December), the nearest train station serviced by any car rental companies I'm aware of is at Porto Campanha Train Station.
If you plan on renting in Portugal and physically entering Spain, be sure to check that the vehicle supplier permits it, and that if they do, the insurance you have (whether your own or a specific policy) also covers the trip. It's not uncommon to see rental clauses state you cannot cross boarders.

We are renting a car from Porto later this year. When looking at our options, we too noticed many of the options on Europcar had a surcharge when picking up a car at the Porto airport. It's also several miles outside of town. We checked with our hotel/guesthouse and they pointed out either Bessa Leite or Campanhã are much easier to reach and very close to the motorway (about 500 meters).
