Ponta Delgada to Furnas transportation for day trip

I am a single traveler planning to stay in Ponta Delgada for a week and don’t want to rent a car. I’d like to spend at least a half day in Furnas with my main destination being the Terra Nostra park. I realize I could go with an organized tour, but I enjoy doing my own thing.

Is it feasible to take a taxi both ways? How hard would it be to find a taxi for the return trip?

Is a public bus a good option? If so, how far is the bus stop from Terra Nostra?

I look forward to your suggestions.

A roundtrip taxi should cost just under 100 euros. You can ask the driver (or have your hotel call and ask) as you get into the taxi while in Ponta Delgada to pick you up in Furnas at a specific time. Otherwise you can simply ask the front desk in the hotel in Furnas, adjacent to the park, to call a taxi for you.

Furnas village is stunning and warrants an entire day, and overnight if possible. I suggest at least three hours or so to enjoy the thermal pools and walk through the park and gardens. A must-do is eating cozido at one of the restaurants in the village or in Terra Nostra Garden Hotel.

I strongly suggest not taking a bus. Sure, you will save a ton of money, but it will be a long and slow journey to get there and back. Allow well over 90 minutes and over 50 stops each way. The bus stops in Furnas are outside the park entrance or very close to it. There might only be three buses per day, in either direction, depending on the day of the week.

Lots of companies offer day trips and you should still have time to explore the village on your own if you desire. Check TripAdvisor for reviews. Otherwise, depending on what month you will be there, a rental car will be economical, allow you to sightsee on the way to Furnas and on the way back, and be a big time saver.

Please know the first 52 pages of my Azores guidebook are totally free to access and read. The link is in the post written by the webmaster at the top of this Portugal forum. By the way, I designed a full day self-guided walking tour of Furnas that is in the Sao Miguel chapter.

I hope this helps. :-)

Thank you for your detailed reply. It was extremely helpful. I’ll rule out the bus-although it sounds like a bit of an adventure with all those stops! When you mentioned the round trip taxi price, were you including two fares of about 50 dollars each?

I appreciate your other suggestions and will follow up with them. I now can access your guide on Kindle. It’s amazing.

Obrigada.

Yes, each way should be around 50 euros. Prices are posted in the luggage carousel in the airport, and outside the airport at the
taxi stand. In the area of Portas da Cidade will be more printed posters showing the price to most towns and villages on the island.

Hiring a taxi is about 25-30 euros per hour, and a bit more for a minivan. Splitting this cost between a group, this is a very inexpensive and efficient way to explore.

As long as the Kindle app is downloaded and installed on your device (smartphone, tablet, or computer), my Azores guide is readable. You do not need a “Kindle” device to read it. When in the Azores, using your smartphone will be optimal, especially following my self-guided walks, and also while following my self-guided driving tours and using the map/direction hyperlinks.

De nada :-)
