Ponta Delgada, Azores: DIY Food-Wine Tasting

My wife and I would like to get a sampling of different local food dishes and wines, or other Portuguese spirits, while in port at Ponta Delgada on a cruise. Our day in port is Friday, April 14, 2023 from 9:00 am to around 5:00 pm, the ship sails at 6:00 pm. We looked at a food "tour", but there were only two drinks [type not defined] We suspect if we had a plan of where to stop, we could get much more out of $85.28 [2022 price, perhaps higher in 2023] and we could spend as long or brief a time as we wanted at each stop.

You have nailed the issues with cruise ships, not enough time to experience a place on a short stop. You should add info such as Azores, to your post.

Try Mercearia Sao Pedro Wine & Tapas in Ponta Delgada. I stumbled upon it on my latest trip to São Miguel back in August. Since you are not going to be there at night, your options are limited.

If you dock at Portas do Mar, it is a quick 5-7 minute walk back to the ship.

My freemium Azores guide (top of the Portugal Forum) has a food section that might be of help.

If you really want to try liquors, there is Mulher do Capote in Ribeira Grande and Lima & Quental in Ribeira Seca. You will need a car rental or taxi to reach either of them.
