We are doing a 5 week trip to Spain and Portugal. Bought Rick's Spain book, but the Portugal book, revised, not out till May. In Portugal going to Salema, Lisbon & Porto. Booked apt. in Lisbon using VRBO. Would love some recommendations for places in Salema and Porto. Not into the glitzy, Like classic small places that reflect the couture of the city. Love to walk.

As a matter of interest, why Salema? The RS advice is very out of date, as it's no longer a quaint fishing village and has been swamped by over development.
The Hotel Residencial in the centre of Salema is very basic and dated. The other hotel resort is nauhotels.com. Otherwise, it's VRBO or Airbnb. You don't say when you are travelling, but there have been reports that many places are fully booked during the peak July/August period, so don't delay.
Jennifer and I agree on Salema. I have no idea why RS still recommends it, as I found it very disappointing. If you want an Algarve stay, Lagos or Tavira are significantly better than Salema IMO.
And, Lisbon and Porto have so many more things to do and see than the Algarve. That said, the rock formations are pretty amazing.
I rented an apartment in 2015 from OportoApartments.com and was very pleased with the apartment and the service I received. They are so willing to help, I almost felt like I had consierge services.
