Places to stay in Lisbon

We are a family of four (kids are 14 and 10) and are visiting Lisbon in the beginning of July for about six nights. We like the idea of renting an apartment, but wonder what neighborhoods might be best. We are open to staying with a family too. Is airbnb good? Any specific recommendations are welcome.

There are many vacation rentals in Lisbon. If you google "vacation rentals Lisbon", you will get many, many results. That said, I've used Airbnb, Homeaway and VRBO in Portugal with good results. As far as an area in which to stay - Baixa has a number of apartments, as do Barrio Alta and Chiado. Bear in mind that the Baixa area is pretty flat but the other areas are very hilly - if that is an issue for you. You can easily research the different neighborhoods and decide which sounds like a good fit for you and your family.

Last year we stayed at this apartment booked through homeaway. The owner was easy to communicate with and the apartment was very nice. There was a small corner shop for groceries just up the road, and a larger grocery store a few minutes walk away. On the square just below the apartment there were two tapas restaurants, with plenty of other dining choices nearby.

Hi from Wisconsin,
We used airbnb and had a great place and location off Rossio Square south of the theatre. We also had a sos-so place in Chaido north of the train station and up the hill. I should have been alerted when the first replied immediately to my questions , was helpful, and fun. While the second went silent after I rented. That on the cancelation policies. Friendly and the second unfriendly and punishing.

In other cases we used booking.com. and found good apartments.

We went, just my husband and I, and stayed at apartment in the Bairro Alto and loved it. We are in our 70's and the walking was not a problem for us. They have great looooong escalators to get you through the toughest parts in the metro stations. The people there could not have been friendlier. Our apartment had a few problems, but nothing insurmountable, my husband wound up adjusting the p-trap in the bathroom as the woman who owned it knew nothing about plumbing. We got it through vrbo, I think, but paid through pay pal. Hope you'll love Lisbon as much as we did.
Happy traveling!
