My husband, 11 yo son, and I will have a week in Portugal late May/early June. We are flying in and out of Lisbon and will not have a car. What are some must see stops outside of Lisbon? Is there enough to do in Lisbon if we stay the entire week? We live in Florida so beaches are not a must. Thank you!
There is lots to see and do in Lisbon and staying a full week would be enjoyable. I suggest sleeping in the Alfama neighborhood, it has a village feel and is a great place to end the night with a glass of port listening to fado music at a nearby restaurant.
After you’ve exhausted Lisbon’s four old towns visit Belém’s Monastery of Jerónimos. Other good day trip options are Sintra and Évora.
Lisbon has one of the world’s great aquariums, the Oceanario. Highly recommend.
If you're only using public transportation, some of the best day trips from Lisbon are:
Sintra (well described in the RS book)
Cascais (although this is more beach so maybe not for you)
Mafra (can take a bus from Campo Grande to the palace in Mafra)
Evora (take a direct train from Rossio)
I'm returning to Lisbon for a third time this summer and will be spending a week there. I'll easily be able to fill my time with all Lisbon has to offer!
