One day in Lisbon & Delgado ( Azores)

We are spending one day in each of these towns while on a cruise in November & are wondering what fun things can we do in such a short amount of time? Are there Hop On Hop Off Buses in either town?

Hop on Hop off buses get mired down in traffic, not recommended.
Look at a guide book for the highlights. We loved the Belem area of Lisbon. Book tickets ahead for Monasterio Jeronimos.

For your Ponta Delgada port call, remember that the town itself is small and easily walkable. Getting out to the countryside is worth effort. I'd suggest you go to Tours by Locals, enter your ship and dates and click on shore excursions. The natural beauty of Sete Cidades, Furnas, and Lagoa do Fogo are all wonderful day trips. Going with a private guide will be less expensive than a shore excursion and with only a few companions, it's an excellent way to see the sites. If you find something you like but can't afford alone, CruiseCritic's roll call for your sailing gives you the opportunity to find travel buddies onboard to share the cost. For Lisbon, once you narrow down the direction you'd like to take in Lisbon -- art, history, food, architecture, whatever, you could also search for guides that might meet your needs. Searching the shore excursions part of the website with give you guides that have lots of experience doing day trips with cruisers; you won't miss your ride.

There is so much to do in Lisbon. It's too bad you only have one day. Definitely look at a guidebook to see what interests you. One thing I would recommend is to visit Sao Jorge Castle, where you get lovely views of the city. From there you can wander around the Alfama district, Lisbon's oldest neighborhood. It wasn't destroyed during the earthquake in the 1700's.

Lisbon is great for strolling and exploring and there are many miradouros (viewpoints) where you get excellent views of the city and the river, and can relax with drinks.

Belem is a wonderful neighborhood, too, with the Jeronimos monastery. Instead of waiting in long lines at Belem Tower, I suggest walking over to the Discoveries Monument after you visit the monastery. Take the elevator to the top where you will have awesome views. There are never any lines here.
