One Day in Lisbon - Cruise Ship

We will be in Lisbon for one day, (cruise ship port), and we have never been to Lisbon. Can anyone give advise as what to do for the day in Lisbon? We'd like to get a feel for the city and visit the major sites.

Walk around the area of Rossio and Restadores Squares, then toward water. Take elevator up to Barrio Alto.
*****Take tram/ train to Belem area with Monasterio Jeronimos, a really gem, Monument to Discoveries, Coach Museum, etc. This is location where the explorers left from.We spent nine nights in Lisbon and Belem was our favorite.

We were in Lisbon just for a port day on a cruise back in 2016. In that one busy day we followed the Rick Steves Three Neighbourhood walk [Alfama, Baixa, and Bairro Alto]. We did not go to Belem. We had ample time for a decent lunch and a bit of shopping and were back at the ship in plenty of time. We didn't enter any of the major sites. We started by taking a taxi as soon as we were off the ship to the castle, then walking downwards.

We explored on our own. My wife speaks some Portuguese so she was wanting to put it to use. We took a bus for a little distance into the center, then walked around, seeing a couple of churches, taking a tram down the hill, then walking back to the ship. She had a good conversation with the clerk in a news kiosk. He warned us of pickpockets in the area!

We weren‘t too interested in museums, etc. If you want to maximize such things, check out the ship‘s shore excursions.

There are four old towns in Lisbon you want to visit: the Alfama and castle, Baixa, Bairo Alto and Chiado. Rick Steves guidebook has self-guided walking tours of all four.

Just one day in Lisbon, not enough but you can see a lot.

The top attractions to visit in Lisbon are:
Oceanário de Lisboa
Alfama
Mosteiro dos Jeronimos
Calouste Gulbenkian Museum - Founder's Collection
Museu Nacional do Azulejo

I would add St. Georges Castle, just up the hill from where the cruise ships dock.
Also, when at the Monastery go to Belen.

Not sure when you are cruising but we are going in October 2021 on Celebrity Apex. They have changed our itinerary and we are no longer docking in Lisbon. We are going to Maderia instead and going earlier than planned. Not sure why.
