2nd question...
I have been notified that October 5 2026 is a national hollday (Republic Day) and that some sites may be closed. But, I have also read that the tourists shops and sites will be open. What all is affected by this holiday? We can easily just stay in Lisbon proper and walk about- will there be parades, or..?

Republic Day is considered a bank holiday. You will notice almost zero effects unless you need a bank or CTT (post office). Some offices may also be closed but nothing you would need will be closed - even the main monuments, museums, etc. I don’t recall any large parades but some of the smaller towns may have small celebrations.
