Oct 2026 - Day Trip to Sintra - looking for recommendations

There are many small group tours of Sintra. My favorite trip there was with CoolTours Lisbon. I’ve heard good things about Lisbon Riders, too. And, if you want to pay the money for a private guide, they would design the trip around your preferences. However, Pena and the Quinta are on almost all of the small group tours, too.

We hired a private guide when we were in Sintra because we wanted to tailor our tour to sites that we wanted to visit that weren't included on the traditional small tours and exclude others that were. Our guide picked us up at our hotel at 9 am and we returned past 7 pm. We visited the National Palace, the Moorish Castle, Quinta da Regaleira and Pena Palace. We thought it was a really good tour except we did not have enough time at the Quinta da Regaleira. All of our tickets were provided by the guide so we didn't have to. worry about timing as well as transportation around Sintra to get to these different sites. We took the train and had a timed entry ticket to the Pena Palace. It was pretty "easy" in general. We took the train, walked to the Pena Palace (quite a hike), and arrived to chaos in the queue - despite timed entry. We were a bit early for our time (good chance to get a look at the outside of the palace), but what we saw were no clear groupings by time, no staff coordinating the lines, and quite a lot of folks (snaking down the road a bit) with varying entry times. IOW - unnecessarily disorganized. Regardless, we got through the line, toured the palace, and were on our way. To me, the tour of the palace was a big "meh" and I wouldn't do it again (nor have done it at all).

What I really liked was the Moorish castle. That was much more my style - open and easy to explore - and the one thing I would definitely recommend from visiting Sintra. So, your "bonus" option would be my "primary" focus.

Also, regarding the train ticket to Sintra, I'd recommend popping into the train station beforehand to get your ticket, rather than just waiting until the morning you are going. We waited, and the line for tickets was much longer due to so many folks also planning a day trip to Sintra (or elsewhere). Buy ahead when it is less busy and you can just head to the tracks in the morning.

Also, the weather we got in Sintra was a bit misty/rainy off and on. Not sure if that is normal or just when we were there, but plan on different weather between Lisbon and Sintra.

I’ve done Sintra both ways and honestly you can do it yourself, but it takes a bit of planning. The main thing is booking Pena Palace in advance with a fixed time, that part is strict and can sell out.

If you’re used to Rick Steves tours, I’d say you’ll probably enjoy a small-group tour more. They handle tickets, transport, and timing, so you don’t waste energy figuring out buses or queues.

If you go DIY:
just book Pena early, then do lunch and Regaleira after, it's simple and works well.
So yeah, doable on your own, but a guide makes the day much smoother and more relaxed.

We have hired a private guide who will pick us up from our Lisbon hotel and take us to Sintra. After reading many comments here and elsewhere - we are skipping the interior of Pena and doing only the gardens. From what I have read - the chaos of the interior is , well, chaos! He will take us through the gardens, and Quinta da Regaleira. He doesn't provide the tickets - but sent me the link so that we can purchase them ourselves. He agreed with me that the interior of Pena is somewhat a 'mosh ' pit! And, the gardens do not have the necessity of timed entry. (Don't quote me on that - I do need to check on that!)

If we do a group tour - we would normally do a small group one, but in this case, we didn't want to be held up by stragglers - and those who delay the group.
I found him by doing research on Trip Advisor - not a Viator nor Get Your Guide operator. He is with a group called 'With Locals" .He is licensed as well. When I've had questions he is very quick to respond (taking into consideration the time difference.)
