I was thinking about visiting Obidos as we take the bus from Nazare to Lisbon. My husband and I will both have our 21 inch rolling luggage and a backpack. I read that there is no place to store our luggage. Is it difficult to navigate the streets of Obidos with our belongings?
The biggest challenge to having your luggage in Obidos, would be navigating around all the other tourists. The streets are narrow and pretty crowded. The shops are small so you would have difficulty going in them to look around. You might want to check out tour companies from Lisbon to visit Obidos. I would not have wanted luggage on my visit there.
I agree with the previous poster - Obidos is not the place to go with luggage, as the streets are busy, cobbled therefore uneven and narrow and there are the old city walls to walk around.
Holly, perhaps you might contact TI (the link is here) and they could direct you to a resource where you could for a small fee, stow your bags during your visit.
Do you have time to stay overnight? It was really nice to relax in our hotel and explore the streets as everyone else left. The other thing in Obidos you might want to do is walk up on the ( rather precarious) walls. You will definitely not want luggage for that.
Thanks everyone for your responses. It looks like the trip would be much more enjoyable if we didn't have our luggage to lug around. We'll just do a day trip from Lisbon. I'll be staying in Lisbon for 6 nights, we're also planning to do a day trip to Sintra. Six nights doesn't seem to be enough since my husband and I like to take it slow and absorb the culture during our European trips.
Obidos has lots of charm, and even more tourists. If you primary interest is in cultural encounters there are many other choices in Lisbon and small towns much closer to Lisbon. Given your short stay in Lisbon, I don't think the travel time to and from Obidos would be the best use of your time.
I recommend the walking tours of Lisbon mentioned in Rick's guide. Good for historic sights, and also for cultural insights.
As others have said, you do not want to do Obidos with your luggage. Even if your stay in Lisbon is brief, a day trip to Obidos is worth it. There are several pottery shops there that sell authentic hand made pottery, and the city is charming. Definitely worth the trip from Lisbon. Sintra is an easy train ride from Lisbon and has some impressive castles, shops, and very good food. In Lisbon I recommend the Alfama district and spending time in the more touristy Baixa-Chiado district. Lots to see and do.
