NYE in Funchal

We are planning to visit Madeira for a week over New Years' 2027/28. I've been told the New Year's Eve fireworks and celebrations are spectacular and we're excited to be there. Hopefully our adult daughters will be joining us, and possibly some other friends.

My wife & I were there for 5 nights late October to early November. We stayed in Funchal at a great B&B on Nova de São Pedro, just around the corner from the municipal garden. We had a lovely time with lots of activities. We plan to stay in the same general area

Wonder if anyone has experience with the NYE events and any advice for that time of year? I'm mainly concerned with weather, and the possibility of things getting postponed or cancelled due to rain.

In the 11 years I’ve lived in Portugal, I don’t ever recall the fireworks being cancelled. I have friends who have gone a couple of times and say it’s amazing.

However, prices go up and accommodations are at a premium. I would suggest booking sooner rather than later.

I’m envious, as I’ve been wanting to go. But, the airlines increase their fares exponentially at that time of the year, or they did the year I checked into it. But, that is from the mainland. Have no idea about flying from the U.S. or elsewhere.

Thank you for this information! Yes, I am planning to book our airfare to Madeira and lodgings early next year. The owners of the Funchal apartment we stayed in last year have other properties and I've been in contact with them to find and book something well in advance.

We will be arriving in northern Europe in December 2027, to visit various Christmas markets with another couple for several days. Not sure yet where we will spend Christmas itself, but need to decide that (London? Dublin? Paris? suggestions welcomed!). Once that's determined, I'll start looking for the best airfare to the island.

The Christmas markets are great. Vienna is my favorite, so far.

Regarding Christmas itself, out of the places you mentioned, Dublin was my least favorite. Have fun planning.
