New airport strikes announced

The trade union of Portugal’s investigators, inspectors and border guards (SIIFF) has announced several strike periods from May 20 for Portugal’s main passenger airports: Lisbon, Porto, Faro and Madeira.

According to these ‘pre-announcements’, delivered on the day the interior ministry announced plans to reinforce the operational capacity of Portuguese airports during the summer period due to the increase in passengers, the stoppage at Lisbon’s Humberto Delgado airport will take place between 5:00am and 10:00am from May 20-22, May 27-29, June 3-5, June 10-12, June 17-19 and June 24-26. (These hours coincide with the majority of international flight arrivals. Early morning strikes in the past have resulted in complete chaos in the already struggling terminal.)

There was some discussion of these proposed strikes on a Portugal facebook page I follow. Some in the group, said it was similar to striking in other parts of Europe. "Welcome to Europe", was said. Maybe I've been really lucky in my travels, but the only time we were potentially going to be affected by a strike was one day in Italy, buses and train travel was to be affected, and when we woke in the morning, that strike was cancelled.

When we were just in Portugal, we had two train trips cancelled and we had to use buses, which was fine except the terminals FLIX used were much less convenient than the train stations. The train strikes lasted about a month, yes? Not all trains were affected, but many were.

We really enjoyed Portugal, but it seems to me, that tourism is increasing at a pace that is difficult for them to handle.
