Hi fellow travelers
We have booked a Lufthansa flight from Denver to Lisbon with only a one hr layover in Munich where I think we will need to go through customs. With such a short layover I m not sure how we can make our connecting flight to Lisbon on time. Now we are Trying to figure out what the best strategy may be for a room on the day we arrive current flight arrival in Lisbon is 1:20 pm. We have 5 days before we fly to Madiera for a week and hoping to hire an Uber to get around as we wanted to see Sintra, Óbidos and Évora. Any suggestions are much appreciated. We don’t have any hotel reservations yet.
We spent a couple of weeks in Portugal in 2018 and absolutely loved it.
Sintra is close to Lisbon, you should be able to Uber there, but you might want to consider a local tour. We booked a tour with Portugese for a Day that covered Pena Park and Palace, Quinta da Regaleira, had lunch in Sintra, then to Cabo da Roca, and Cascais. It was a great day and the tour operator was top notch; only ten or twelve people in a nice comfortable van.
Evora is 80 miles from Portugal, which might be expensive to Uber. Make it a day trip by taking the train and using Uber when you get there. It's a fascinating Roman town, don't miss the Chapel of Bones!
Didn't get to Obidos, but it's 50 miles away from Lisbon and the train/Uber day trip might work for you there, too.
Also PLENTY to see and do in Lisbon.
Good luck!
The fact that the airlines actually sold a ticket with such a short layover is amazing to me! You will need to go through passport control in Munich since it’s the first European country you enter. I can’t imagine being able to make it in an hour. I would suggest you call Luftansa and talk with them.
Don’t use an Uber for the trips you mention. The train to Sintra and Evora will work great. Easy and cheap. Obidos isn’t as easy by train but might be doable by bus. Or, I’m thinking there will be small group tours from Lisbon to Obidos. All that said, Obidos is overcrowded and worth about two hours. So, with such a short time in Lisbon, I would skip it. Too many other things to see in Lisbon.
An easy way to see Sintra is a small group tour. Then you don’t have to worry about transport from place to place once you get there. Uber would work once in Sintra, if you don’t want to do a tour, but taking an Uber from Lisbon isn’t necessary.
FYI - Bolt is very popular in Portugal. It uses the same drivers as Uber and is usually cheaper. It might be worth it to download the app.
