May in Portugal, in love with fabric.

Portugal is calling to me., especially the fabric; Linen, cotton, napkins, tablecloths, towels. Is there one place, or many where fabric is a main event?
Are there mills I could visit? Farms that grow cotton where I could stay?

Take a look at threadwritten.com. Sarah is an American currently living in Amsterdam, she organizes textile and embroidery tours and workshops in Portugal. Although the dates won't work for you since you are going in May, she may be able to offer suggestions of where you can visit.

For anyone interested, she also does workshops in Budapest on Hungarian embroidery - would love to attend one of these myself.

Also consider cork. You'll see a lot of products made from cork and you can buy it cork fabric by the meter just as you would other fabrics. I went to a factory a few kms from Evora for their tour which explained the entire process from acorn to the shop. And they had a huge selection of items.

I’m pretty certain cotton doesn’t grow in Portugal, so don’t count on that. There are a number of fabric stores in Lisbon. Try googling ‘fabric stores Lisbon’ or ‘textiles Lisbon’. I just did and a number of lovely shops came up.
There is an old shop in the Chiado area called Paris em Lisboa that has lovely bedding, etc. A Vida Portuguesa is another store with a few outlets in Lisbon. They have products made in Portugal, which include fabric ones.
