Hi, I will be travelling in Spain/Portugal/France next Easter through to mid May and I note that 1st May is a national holiday. What can I expect? I’m thinking i’ll Either be in Sintra or Lisbon
If you don’t want to go to a bank that day, you will notice no real difference. There could be a shop or two closed, but no wide scale closings.
Lots of holidays in May all over Europe. Check whether museums will be open -- in Florence last May 1 most museums were closed but our hotel directed us to a garden that was open free that day. And restaurants should be open.
I can't speak to Portugal, but in Spain, MANY museums will be closed on May 1 - starting with the Prado (which only closes 3 days a year - Christmas Day, New Years Day, and May 1).
So, do check specific attractions for that day, if you had your heart set on seeing a specific place.
The websites of individual museums/attractions normally list the days they are closed, so check the Gulbenkian, monastery at Belen, etc.
