Madeira/Porto/Douro/Lisbon

We are headed to Portugal for the 1st 2 weeks of Sept. My husband is a photographer. We would love any must see or must miss advice. We Fly from the states to Madeira for 4 nights then to porto for 3 nights then to Douro for 2 nights and down to Lisbon for 2 nights. We have been to Salema in the past. I have heard Braga, Nazarene, Sintra, Obidos are all beautiful. Would it be worth it to lose a night in Douro? Also, Has anyone stayed at a Quinta lately. I have heard there have been a lot of fires.

Thank you

I wouldn’t say Nazare is beautiful rather a typical crowded beach front small city. Obidos is small and quaint, charming for a few hours at most, exists on tourism.
Sintra is attractive, and you should expect crowds. The National Palace is a very worthwhile visit. Consider visiting both Evora and Coimbra. We visited the Minho region which we enjoyed but did not see Braga but we did enjoy staying in Guimares, Portugal’s first capital.

Hi from Wisconsin,
Get a rental car for Madeira. Where should you go? Madeira is like New Zealand. and Iceland There is one road that loops the island. The road along the mountain's spine is spectacular.

Obidos toward evening (like everywhere else) has nice views over the city from the upper track along the wall. I guess Obidos is crowded. We spent four days or so and didn't feel it. Then again we went out of the city during the day and enjoyed the place mornings and evenings.

I would put Evora on the list. from there you can get to the fortresses along the Spanish border.
