Hello!
My husband and I are booked for our first Rick Steves vacation this October! So excited to be touring the Heart of Portugal in 12 days. We are interested in adding a trip to Madeira either before or after the Portugal tour. Has anyone done this? if so, we would appreciate any ideas or suggestions you are willing to share. Which airline did you use? Where did you stay?

I visited Madeira following my RS Portugal tour in 2022. I flew from Porto and stayed for a week. I posted about some of the things I did here:

I flew Transavia from Porto to Funchal. I flew Easyjet from Funchal to London (I spent a couple weeks in the UK after Madeira).
