Spending 4 nights in mid September, stay in Luz or Lagos? We are in our mid 60's, healthy, looking for good beach/pool time. We will have a car, but if we stay in Luz would not be against a taxi to Lagos. Any idea of cost? Love good food & wine.
Luz is a purpose built resort and is very hilly. There is a small town beach which can get very busy. Parking near the beach is limited.
Lagos is much larger and although much developed, retains the older heart and city walls in part. There are a selection of long, straight easy access beaches around Meia Praia and smaller coves accessed via a hundred or so steps to the west around Dona Ana. There is more to see here than in Luz.
You will get good food and wine in both locations. The sea will be cold in both places. Both will be very busy in mid September.
I would opt for Lagos.
I also would vote for Lagos. Much more to do with several beaches, the great rock formations and a nice walkable old town. The seafood is lovely all over the Algarve and the wine all over Portugal is great.
While Luz is a cute town, it’s really quite small.
