Hello,
We are looking for a place to stay for perhaps 3 nights on our way from Sao Martinho do Porto to Lamego. A friend who travels to Portugal every year says that the area around Viseu is beautiful and I would like to spend some time there. Does anyone have a suggestion for place to stay in this area?

I have stayed in both the Montebelo Viseu Hotel and the pet-friendly Pousada and they are lovely properties.. I would recommend them both.
Not crazy about the food in the Pousada, but enjoyed O Cortico
It is a beautiful countryside and good wine in the region.

Yes, Hotel Palace do Capitao is a good choice with a nice view. Viseu and the surrounding region is also a great choice. That's where you start to discover the most authentic Portugal :) Be sure to try some local specialities like the Lafões Style Roasted Veal (from Lafões), Codfish and/or Octopus Lagareiro style.
If you have any time left take the A25 from Viseu to Aveiro, take a Moliceiro ride and eat some Ovos Moles. Also, a wonderful place in Portugal and just 10Km from Costa Nova do Prado wich you'll also enjoy very much.
