Lodging in June

We're in Portugal from mid-June until about the 4th or 5th of July, with a wedding on the 22nd. We haven't created an itinerary and like to leave it a bit open in case we decide to stay someplace a bit longer. Any thoughts or experience regarding how difficult it might be to set up reasonable lodging on short notice and/or if that is likely to make it more expensive?

Or perhaps we should pick 2-4 places to base ourselves and travel around on day trips. Opinions?

Thanks

Whereabouts in Portugal are you visiting?

Local schools start their long summer holidays in mid June and it’s a popular time for Northern Europeans with no children to visit before their schools end, so places will be busy.

For that time of the year, I would not wait until the last minute. It’s not that it would be more expensive but rather it might be quite difficult to find something on short notice. If you stay in smaller towns it might be doable, but I would not wait until I arrived to reserve accomodations.
