Lison scouting trip and vacation

Trying to combine a scouting trip to consider moving to Portugal/Lisbon for the longer term and want to have some vacation time as well. Any recommendations on which area of Lisbon would be good to stay in that would give us a mix of both - reasonable for vacation, and give us a sense of what it might be like to live there longer term. The trip would be around 10 days in mid March for scouting, so any accommodation links would be helpful too

You might take a look at Campo do Ourique or Arroios. I stayed in Campo do Ourique my first month in Portugal while trying to decide where to live. It was much easier to obtain residency then, so didn’t know where I would end up. I found the neighborhood to be lovely. Not touristy, mostly flat, lots of young families and older people with a small Mercado. I considered living there until I visited Cascais, where I ended up.
I have friends (immigrants), who live in Arroios and they love it. I admit I haven’t visited them, so this is not a first hand recommendation
Estrela might also be good.

All of these are off the tourist track, which is a must IMO.

bkasrel,
I (as usual) agree with kathrynj. The mercado do campo de ourigue is both charming and functional. You are also at the west end of the #28 tram so you can get to the heart of Lisbon easily
We usually stay in the Principe Real near the Praca das Flores, but that has changed a lot in the 10 years we have been visiting
